Yin Yoga is a quiet meditative form of yoga that is deeply restful to our nervous system. Holding poses for an extended amount of time (usually about 3-5 minutes) you find an edge using props to support your body that sends message it is safe to let go of the deep fascial layers. Fascia is a system of connective tissue that wraps around our muscles and organs. It is a crucial component of the musculoskeletal system. As we age fascia becomes less pliable and elastic, which contributes to back pain, stiffness and a limited range of motion. Along with its benefits on the fascia just the act of slowing down can be therapeutic. So, in this way Yin Yoga can help us move out of fight, flight, freeze aspect of our nervous system. This practice is an opportunity to be fully present to your life and to bathe yourself in loving attention.

Think of restorative yoga as a way to bring your body away from a stress response (fight or flight) and into a calmer state of rest and digest. Yoga poses in this practice are held for an extended period – anywhere from 5-20 minutes – using several props placed carefully around your body so that you can relax into complete bliss. Restorative yoga is perfect if you suffer from anxiety, are looking for a way to destress, or just want to feel as though you’ve spent an hour giving yourself a big hug.
